“Nobody can be a true hero unless he has been on the Great Wall” goes the popular Chinese saying. It stretches 6,000 kilometers from the fortresses of Shanhaiguan in the east all the way to Jiayuguan in the west. The most visited section is near Badaling Pass northwest of Beijing.
The Forbidden City is situated in the heart of Beijing. Protected by a ten metre high wall with watchtowers and a moat, this massive complex is the biggest palace in the world boasting an area of 720,000 square metres. Today the Forbidden City houses the Palace Museum but it was the Chinese Imperial Palace and winter residence of the Emperor of China from 1420 until 1924.
China’s most important archeological find discovered the Terracotta Army. It was found to be a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It comprises 8,000 life-size warriors, 520 horses, and more than 100 chariots, built to guard the First Emperor’s tomb. It is dated from around 280 BC.
Fifteen kilometers from Beijing, this stunning Imperial Summer Place is set amid more than 700 acres of beautiful parklands consisting of palaces, lakes and gardens and is one of China’s most visited attractions. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges.
Take a cruise on the stunningly beautiful Li River. The most popular stretch is from the town of Guilin to Yangshuo – 80 kilometers of remarkable rock formations and caves, including the Mount of Unique Beauty, Elephant Trunk Hill, and Reed Flute Cave.
No visit to China would be complete without one panda experience. Visit the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, located in the province of Sichuan, to watch the amazing work being done with as many as 80 pandas. You can’t help but fall in love!
